President’s Letter

HVSC 2008

Dear HVSC Member Family:

I’m looking forward to seeing you on Opening Day, Saturday, May 24, 2008. The Club opens at 9:00 am. We will celebrate the new season with our annual Opening Day Picnic in the pavilion area and under the shade of the big oak trees in the picnic grove. Please join us in welcoming the new Member families and share with them all the exciting activities that the Club has to offer.

Liz Hill is the new Club Manager and Eric Allshouse is the Assistant Manager – thank you both for taking on these important roles. Pete Loveland (Swim and Dive Coach) and Phil Campbell (Tennis Pro) will both return this year and continue to provide the leadership and enthusiasm to our championship teams.

Team Participation, Lessons, and Guest Passes
You will be able to sign up for the Swim, Dive, and Tennis teams, as well as swimming, diving, and trampoline lessons. Prepaid equipment orders will also be available for pick up. Daily guest passes are $5.00 each, due upon entering the Club. Packages of 10 guest passes are available at a discounted rate of $40.00—if you purchase them on or before opening weekend. Team swimsuits and accessories from Sun & Snow will be available for purchase too. Checks or cash are accepted.

Volunteerism
On Sunday, May 18th we will have the Pre-Season Landscaping Day from 9:00am – 1pm. Please help get the Club ready for the new season! We need Member families to come out and work with Mark Heiber and Mike Abbott on various landscaping tasks. Please join us-even if it is just for an hour or two, your time and muscles are valuable! All member families who volunteer for Pre-Season Landscaping will receive four(4) guest passes. We will also need volunteers on Sunday, September 7 for the Post-Season Work Day. All Member families who volunteer for Post-Season Work Day will receive five (5) guest passes. Opening and closing the Club takes the support and strength of its members. Families that have children on the Swim/Dive teams or in the Tennis Program are asked to volunteer for Swim and Dive Meets and other social events throughout the season. Volunteerism at HVSC has always been a strong point and we need to continue that spirit!

Communication
If you’d like to join HVSC’s Yahoo group email, send an email to: huronvalleyswimclub-subscribe@yahoogroups.com. Please provide your member name and state your request to be added to the email list. The Club website’s URL is: www.huronvalleyswimclub.org, which has the latest club information. The login for the “Members Only” section is “huronvalley” and the password is “swimclub.”

Picnic Grove
The HVSC Board and several Club Members have taken on the task of re-planting and rejuvenating the Club’s grounds. The picnic grove trees along with the pine trees bordering the driveway entrance need to be replanted for future growth and beauty. Club Members are asked to make donations to the “Picnic Grove” fund to support this important project. Donations of $250 or more will be recognized on a plaque to be displayed near the picnic area.

Facility Improvements
This year the lap pool will get a new coat of Marcite, just like the mail pool did last year. The play structures, metal jungle gym, steel climber near the lap pool, and the wooden structure in the sand pit by the pavilion will all be replaced with durable and safe play structures. The Jump-Shot and Space Ball structures were replaced last year, and remain a huge attraction for members. The tennis courts have been repaired and several replaced, so tennis enthusiasts spread the word to come out and play!

Tennis Program
Last year’s Tennis Program was such a big hit that we’ve carried the same schedule into this season. The schedule offers two options:

1. A one-time, upfront fee of $75 per child for kids 12 years and under (six 1-hour lessons) or $100 per child for kids 13+ (six 1.5-hour lessons). This allows children to take tennis lessons for six weeks at a substantial savings.
2. Alternatively, children can drop in anytime for a lesson at a rate of $8 per hour of instruction. Members will be billed twice over the summer for their child’s tennis lessons, as well as adult clinics.

Late Night Swim/Movie Night
Last year we piloted late night swimming and movies in the pavilion which were a great success! We will continue both activities again this year and we will have three evenings of swimming and a movie. Movie recommendations are welcome. We will also have two adults-only gatherings to share an evening of food, music, and laughter under the stars. Don’t forget your swimsuit if you want to play against the HVSC staff in a friendly game of water volleyball!
